About Delta

Delta Sigma Theta was founded at Howard University, January 13, 1913, as the result of a unanimous action of active members to reorganize a local Greek letter society which antedated Delta by five years.

Delta founders envisioned a new organization that would lift the race through combating ignorance, prejudice, discrimination and injustice and would reach into all parts of the country and brings together college women of like ideals, scholarship, and potentialities. On such principles was Delta Sigma Theta founded.

This new page in Greek letter history changed the pattern for such societies among Black women. Since then, Delta women have stood for all that is best for all people. Since its initial action of being recorded in Washington, DC as the first incorporated Black sorority, Delta has continued to lead in the never ending struggle for all persons to be equal, to rise above the oppressions of society and to walk proudly as human individuals.
